LISA BATE

Lisa Bate is regarded as one of Canada's global ambassadors for sustainable design. A former Director and Board Chair of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), Lisa is a Board Director and the Immediate Past Chair of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) – where she led the facilitation of the 2020-22 WorldGBC three-year strategic plan – and was a representative to the United Nations' Environmental Protection—Sustainable Buildings and Climate Initiative. In 2018, Lisa was named the winner of Canada's Clean16 for the Building sector at the Clean50 awards celebration. In 2016, Lisa was a session speaker on the topic of "Building a Global Sustainable Practice: Thinking Locally for Global Impact" at the American Association of Architects (AIA) Annual Conference. From 2012-2016, Lisa lived and worked in Shanghai, China and signed a collaboration agreement between CaGBC and ChinaGBC as well as was a representative to the Urban Land Institute (ULI) APAC Region's Shanghai Management Committee Lisa leads teams to deliver some of the most advanced sustainable and high-performance built environments around the world. Most recently, Lisa led the design team responsible for Humber College Building Nx deep energy retrofit, the first Net Zero Carbon Design Certified Retrofit Building in Canada and winner of the CaGBC Green Building Excellence Awards 2020 – Existing Building; she also led the design of the Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation at Mohawk College in Hamilton, the first new Net Zero Carbon Operational Certified building in Canada and winner of the 2019 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Award of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture. Lisa was also Principal-in-Charge of the B+H team for the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games in Toronto, where she worked with Games organizers and Infrastructure Ontario to deliver 18 sport venues including seven major new athletics facilities within stringent schedule and cost constraints whilst achieving up to LEED Platinum EB:O&M certifications. Lisa is a champion for gender parity in the architecture and design professions. She has written extensively on the imperative for diversity and inclusivity, including a three-part blog article series with Huffington Post Business Canada highlighting Women in Architecture, and she lectured on gender parity at notable conferences such as the RAIC Festival of Architecture. She was awarded the Women in Sustainability Leadership Award from Green Building & Design Magazine (2016), and was named among Greenbuild's Women in Green Power (2016). Lisa is a member of B+H's Senior Management Committee where she advocates for inclusivity + diversity initiatives and policies within the firm.
